In brief
The School of Paris was not a single style or manifesto but a meeting point. Artists from Italy, Russia, Eastern Europe and Japan gathered in studio buildings such as La Ruche and in the cafés of Montparnasse, each combining their own origins with the language of modern art; Modigliani’s long-necked portraits are among the best-known results.
