The story behind it

The world’s best-known Japanese artwork has no single original.

  • It isn’t a painting but a woodblock print: thousands of impressions were pulled from carved blocks, and many museums own one.
  • Its vivid blue came from Prussian blue, a pigment newly imported from Europe and very fashionable in Japan at the time.
  • Hokusai was around seventy when he made the series. The tiny mountain framed by the wave is Fuji.
