The story behind it

What made the Mona Lisa the most famous painting in the world was a theft.

  • On 21 August 1911 Vincenzo Peruggia, who worked at the Louvre, walked out with it; it stayed missing for more than two years.
  • It was recovered in Florence in 1913 when Peruggia tried to sell it. Months of headlines turned it into a legend.
  • It is smaller than people expect: about 77 × 53 cm, painted on a poplar panel.
