The story behind it

This isn’t a portrait, and nobody knows who the girl was.

  • It is a “tronie”: a study of an intriguing face and costume rather than a likeness of a particular person.
  • The pearl is just a few brushstrokes, a highlight and a reflection. There isn’t even a hook to hang it from the ear.
  • A 2018 scientific study found eyelashes invisible to the naked eye and a green curtain in the background that has since darkened.
