The story behind it

Van Gogh never saw this night, at least not the way it looks here.

  • He painted it in June 1889 at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, working by day from memory of the view from his bedroom window.
  • There was no village in that view: the church and houses came from his imagination.
  • The brightest “star” beside the cypress is most likely Venus; astronomers have calculated it shone brightly at dawn at the time.
