The story behind it

There is real gold in this painting.

  • Klimt used real gold leaf alongside oil paint; it is the high point of his “golden phase”, inspired by Byzantine mosaics.
  • The Austrian state bought it in 1908 at the Kunstschau, where it was first shown; it has been in Vienna ever since.
  • It is a square canvas, 180 × 180 cm: the embracing couple stand at the edge of a flower-covered cliff.
