The story behind it

There isn’t just one “Scream”.

  • Munch returned to it several times, in paint, pastel and lithograph. One pastel sold for about $120 million in 2012.
  • His notes describe sensing “an infinite scream passing through nature” on a sunset walk; the figure isn’t screaming but hearing it.
  • A pencilled line in a corner of the 1893 version reads “Can only have been painted by a madman”. A 2021 study showed it is in Munch’s own hand.
