Joaquín Sorolla

Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923) was the Spanish master known as the painter of Mediterranean light, famous for his sunlit beach scenes and the light glowing on white clothing.

Life and work
Born in Valencia, he was orphaned at the age of two. After working in Rome and Paris he won a Grand Prix at the 1900 Paris Exposition and gained international fame. He painted huge panels depicting the regions of Spain for the Hispanic Society in New York. His house in Madrid is now the Museo Sorolla.
Strolling along the Seashore (1909) shows his wife Clotilde and daughter María on a Valencian beach, their white dresses rippling in the wind; it hangs in the Museo Sorolla in Madrid.
