Pierre-Joseph Redouté

Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759–1840) was the botanical painter known as “the Raphael of flowers”. The plates of his book The Roses (Les Roses) are among the most reproduced botanical images in the world.

Life and work
Born into a family of painters in present-day Belgium, he worked in Paris as a botanical artist. He painted for Queen Marie Antoinette’s collection and later became the painter of Empress Joséphine’s famous garden at Malmaison.
In The Lilies (1802–16) and The Roses (1817–24) he used colour stipple engraving to depict flowers with both scientific accuracy and extraordinary grace; The Roses contains 169 plates.
