What happened in this period?
In the trade-rich Dutch Republic, painting moved into middle-class homes; Rembrandt, Vermeer and Avercamp, with his winter scenes, worked for this market. In Spain, Velázquez painted for the court. Portraiture, still life and landscape grew into genres of their own.
