Still life and flowers
Vases, fruit and branches
Still life is the genre of arranged inanimate objects such as fruit, flowers and vases. It rose in the 17th-century Netherlands and, with Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and Cézanne’s apples, became a testing ground for modern painting.

In brief
Dutch painters filled flower and table still lifes with extraordinary detail and symbolism. In works like The Basket of Apples, Cézanne showed objects from more than one viewpoint, preparing the ground for Cubism. Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and Irises are among the best-loved examples. Flower and fruit pictures are a classic choice for kitchens and dining rooms.
