What happened in this period?
The century opened with the emotional landscapes of Friedrich and Turner. The invention of paint in tubes took painters outdoors, and Monet and his friends founded Impressionism. By its end Van Gogh, Cézanne and Seurat had redefined painting, while Mucha and Toulouse-Lautrec turned the poster into an art form.
