1900 – 1930
The first decades of the 20th century are the age of modern painting, from Klimt’s gold to the portraits of Schiele and Modigliani, from the abstraction of Kandinsky, Klee and Mondrian to Grant Wood’s rural America.

What happened in this period?
Painting was freed from the duty of imitating appearances. The Fauves set colour free and the Expressionists put feeling first; Kandinsky, Mondrian, Klee and Hilma af Klint made the first abstract paintings. The Bauhaus brought art and design together. Across the Atlantic, Hopper and Grant Wood painted American life.
